History
In October 2014, a group of medical, business, faith and community leaders gathered to discuss the possibility of opening a free health clinic in Hattiesburg. Many of those in attendance had been involved in previous dialogues with different groups interested in offering free dental, pharmaceutical and medical services to people in the Hattiesburg area who fall in the healthcare gap. These concerned leaders were committed to finding the means of connecting volunteer medical and lay people with the medically under-served (uninsured and under-insured adults).
A steering committee was formed and began meeting biweekly to determine the mission, scope, and logistics for Hattiesburg's first free clinic. Members of the steering committee were J. Stephen Beam, MD; Rev. Orlando Burt, DO; Daniel Cirino; Tim Cole, MD; Father Tommy Conway; Eric Dean; Claudine Feig, WHNP-BC; Debbie Graham, LCSW; Lewis "Hudi" Hatten, MD; Joan Holland, RN; Scott Hummel, PhD; Barbara Mauldin, DMD; Ann McCullen; Chris Oglesby; Bill Oliver, FHFMA; David Ott, JD; and Tommy Thornton, FACMPE.
Fellowship Health Clinic opened its doors to begin treating patients on January 15, 2016, under the leadership of volunteer Medical Director J. Stephen Beam, MD, and founding Clinic Director Claudine Feig, WHNP-BC. Angela Neal, RN, followed as Clinic Director from 2016-2021, leading the clinic through growth such as the installation of the Epic electronic health records system and the addition of a second clinic building.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Asbury Foundation of Hattiesburg, Fellowship Health Clinic's operations expanded into a second building on the campus of Edwards Street Fellowship Center in November 2019, That clinic building (1919 Edwards St., Building #3) houses the clinic's medical lab, exam rooms, and administrative offices. The original clinic building (1919 Edwards St., Building #2) houses the free clinic's physical therapy, patient education, and case management services.
Malinda Baucum, RN, MSN, has served as Clinic Director since 2023, a role she accepted after spending more than two years as the clinic's RN Case Manager. Judd Reynolds, DO, assumed the role of volunteer Medical Director in 2021 as J. Stephen Beam, MD, was named Medical Director Emeritus.
